At Analog:Shift, we constantly champion vintage sports watches - divers, pilot’s watches, field watches, and many more. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t room in our hearts for a more contemporary take on a sports luxury timepiece.
These days there’s a wide swathe of offerings whose aesthetic simplicity belies their forward-thinking materials, advanced movement technology, and impressive feature sets. The Hublot Classic Fusion Black Magic Ceramic is one such watch.
Known for its use of innovative materials and some very avant-garde design language, Hublot finds home for its historically-inspired designs within the Classic Fusion line. (Though, to be fair, the maison was founded only in 1980, meaning even its “classic” designs are relatively contemporary!) This particular example is the 45mm Black Magic Ceramic, and is an excellent example of a contemporary take on their original Classic Fusion models from their early days.
Housed in a 45mm polished and satin-finished black ceramic case with a sapphire crystal, signed crown, and bezel secured by titanium screws, it features a matte black dial with applied hour indices, a matching ‘sword’ handset, and a date window at 3 o’clock. Large and sporty, its futuristic aesthetics lend itself to a variety of settings, from city slicking to more formal events.
Powering the watch is, Hublot’s automatic Calibre HUB1112, which offers 42 hours of power reserve and is visible through a sapphire display back. Paired to an integrated black rubber strap with a black-plated, stainless steel deployant clasp, it remains in virtually brand new condition, and includes its original warranty card, dated 2019.
If you're the enthusiast who wants a blend of high end material usage, noteworthy wrist presence, a nod to history, a little bit of luxe swag, and a light peppering of controversy, you just found your watch!
